VII. EL VÉRTIGO QUE NO NOS DEJA

Pertenezco a la generación de la mitad del siglo XX y creo que, como ninguna otra, esa generación pudo atestiguar cambios centelleantes y diversos, muchos de ellos simultáneos, creados por la aceleración de la tecnología. De niño conocí en mi pueblo natal de Masatepe el telégrafo en clave Morse, el teléfono de magneto con manivela y el radio de tubos con antena aérea, y cuando llegué a León para estudiar derecho, allí los periódicos locales se componían todavía con tipos móviles escogidos a gran velocidad por las cajistas en los chibaletes, y se imprimían en prensas manuales de rueda con manubrio, como esas de los grabados de las novelas de Balzac.

Pareciera que estamos hablando de la antigüedad, pero eso fue ayer mismo. Al fin y al cabo, todos somos hoy del siglo pasado, ya dije. Y en las décadas siguientes he ido pasando de la máquina de escribir eléctrica a la computadora, de la humilde Kodak Instamatic a la cámara digital, del avión de hélice al avión a reacción, de las cartas aéreas a los mensajes por correo electrónico, y al blog. ¿Por qué habría de extrañarme entonces que, en unas pocas décadas más, los periódicos sean de cuarzo flexible, o de una materia parecida, y las noticias cambien frente a nuestros ojos?

Vayámonos acostumbrando entonces a decir adiós, a lo mejor, al suave y viejo papel, pero no, por favor, a nuestra privacidad, ni demos nunca la bienvenida al big brother que todo lo ve, y todo lo quiere saber.

pues yo tampoco me resigno a la idea de que siempre hay un ojo viéndolo todo. sé que muchos dirán, no importa que no te resignes, igual el ojo está ahí. así como en el cuento de Monterroso: "y cuando despertó, el dinosaurio todavía estaba ahí". aquí vamos a tener que cambiar la palabra dinosaurio por Big Brother o alguna otra denominación que seguro no faltará. el otro día recibí la publicidad de una microcámara que uno la puede colocar en un muñequito, un adorno o cualquier pequeño objeto y dejarlo en el sitio que uno quiere observar y ya, se entera de todo en imagen y sonido, y me dije, uy, qué terror, que una persona no pueda escapar de un ojo morboso y ni siquiera se entere. es decir, esa ya es una herramienta al alcance de cualquiera, de todos si quisiéramos. ya no es necesario un medio masivo, cada uno se puede convertir en un acechador del otro. ¿y dónde quedan los discursos del derecho a la privacidad? se chocan con los de supuesta seguridad, y el tema es largo, no quiero ponerme pesada, detesto las intervenciones muy extensas, así que no caeré en ello. eso sí, insisto, del papel del libro no me quiero despedir, del de los periódicos puede ser ;)

Sabe Sergio, en un lugar que yo habité y del que no era originaria, se celebraba el aniversario de una organización cuya misión era la de defender la revolución. Para eso se hizo una publicidad en la televisión que además de darle la felicitación por tantos y tantos y tantos años de trabajo bien hecho terminaba diciendo: " Y no olviden: Siempre hay un ojo que todo lo ve".
El comentario se lo hago porque no es que no debamos darle la bienvenida al 'gran hermano', es que el 'gran hermano' hace mucho que está instalado entre nosotros. Lo que hay que hacer es pelearlo siempre. Siempre. Sea donde sea y venga de donde venga, aunque lo haga en nombre de la salvaguarda de una revolución.
Y creo que no hace falta decir dónde era que se conmemoraba el aniversario. Si alguien no sabe que me pregunte y le contestaré con mucho gusto.
Y para terminar, déjeme que le diga: todavía siento la indignación -entonces contenida porque no quedaba otra- que sentí delante del televisor cuando vi la publicidad. Sólo que ahora puedo compartirla. Y me viene bien.

Biografía

Sergio Ramírez nació en Nicaragua en 1942. Publicó su primer libro Cuentos, a los veinte años. Participó en la lucha para derrocar la dictadura Somoza y formó parte del gobierno revolucionario, del que llegó a ser vicepresidente en 1985. En su obra literaria figuran, entre más de una treintena de libros, Castigo divino (1988), Premio Internacional Dashiel Hammett de Novela; Un baile de máscaras (1995), Premio Laure Bataillon a la mejor novela extranjera en Francia en 1998; Margarita está linda la mar, Premio Alfaguara de Novela 1998, y Premio Latinoamericano José María Arguedas en el 2000.
