I. Elefantes que vuelan

En el video el elefante se acerca con paso pesado a la plataforma elástica, y no sin algunas dificultades sube a ella. Luego, comienza a saltar. Sus saltos son cada vez más enérgicos, y poco a poco va ganando altura. Ahora parece que vuela por los aires, más y más alto, y entonces se siente libre de hacer una pirueta de vuelta entera antes de volver  a caer, y cuando cae, se impulsa aún más alto y repite la voltereta, ahora doble, como si no tuviera peso, como si el grosor de su cuerpo y su torpeza hubieran desaparecido y fuera el más ágil de los seres, libre y feliz en su vuelo sin alas. Un elefante que vuela.

            La mujer que hace volar a los elefantes se llama Elizabeth Streb y ha venido desde Nueva York para una estancia de un mes en Villa Serbelloni, en Bellagio, que coincide con la mía, los dos parte de un grupo de residentes escogidos por sus dedicaciones diversas y disímiles, alguien como ella que puede hacer volar los elefantes de verdad, y yo, que si lo intentara, sólo podría lograrlo con la imaginación. Y por eso es que estamos aquí,  escritores, escenógrafos, científicos sociales, ambientalistas, ornitólogos, cineastas, haciendo cada uno lo suyo, hablando entre nosotros durante las comidas y a la hora de los recreos acerca de nuestros oficios diferentes, lo que en esta villa del siglo XVI, que se levanta en lo alto de una colina en medio de un espléndido parque, a los pies el lago de Como, se llama fertilización, un polen de ideas que va de una a otra cabeza.

Biografía

Sergio Ramírez nació en Nicaragua en 1942. Publicó su primer libro Cuentos, a los veinte años. Participó en la lucha para derrocar la dictadura Somoza y formó parte del gobierno revolucionario, del que llegó a ser vicepresidente en 1985. En su obra literaria figuran, entre más de una treintena de libros, Castigo divino (1988), Premio Internacional Dashiel Hammett de Novela; Un baile de máscaras (1995), Premio Laure Bataillon a la mejor novela extranjera en Francia en 1998; Margarita está linda la mar,  Premio Alfaguara de Novela 1998, y Premio Latinoamericano José María Arguedas en el 2000. Así también Cuentos completos (1998), con prólogo de Mario Benedetti; Adiós Muchachos, memoria de la revolución sandinista, (1999); el libro de cuentos Catalina y Catalina (2001); Mentiras Verdaderas (2001) y El viejo arte de mentir (2004), ambos sobre la creación literaria (2001); las novelas Sombras nada más (2002) y Mil y una muertes (2004); Señor de los Tristes, ensayos sobre escritores y escritura (2006), El reino animal, cuentos (2006), Tambor olvidado, ensayos (2007), El cielo llora por mí (2009) y La fugitiva (2011).
