Cuando la física deja estupefacto

Para hacer directamente perceptible el enorme interés filosófico de algunas de las constataciones de la Mecánica Cuántica, a las que últimamente vengo aquí refiriéndome, el auténtico envite que suponen para nuestra razón, hasta qué punto chocan con las ideas que tenemos sobre los mecanismos que rigen la naturaleza y, en consecuencia, subvierten el concepto que nos hacemos de ella, utilizaré un apólogo inspirándome de un texto aun inédito de un grupo de investigación dirigido por el profesor de física de la Universidad de Oviedo Miguel Ferrero:

Supongamos que a dos amigos que se encuentran respectivamente en Santiago de Compostela y Barcelona se les solicita lanzar cien veces una moneda al aire y encontrarse después en San Sebastian para que el observador pueda verificar en cuales de las tiradas habían coincidido en el resultado "cara" o en el resultado "cruz". Lo que cabe esperar es que cada uno de ellos haya extraído más o menos cincuenta por ciento de cara y cincuenta por ciento de cruz. Respecto a las veces en que hay coincidencia, cabe esperar que se trate de veinticinco por ciento de las tiradas. Supongamos sin embargo que al confrontar los resultados el observador constata que han coincidido absolutamente en todas las tiradas. A menos de atribuirlo a una pura casualidad, buscaremos alguna causa clásica. Lo más inmediato será aventurar que ambos tienen algún truco que les permite extraer cara o cruz a voluntad, y que además:

a) O bien se pusieron de acuerdo antes de la prueba respecto al orden en que iban a sacar cara o cruz

b) O bien uno de ellos, el que está en Santiago por ejemplo, tiene algún procedimiento oculto, procedimiento que al observador se le escapa, para comunicar al otro el resultado que sucesivamente ha elegido.

En definitiva, o hay acuerdo en el pasado o hay comunicación oculta. Pues bien: en la mecánica cuántica se dan fenómenos de correlación con las características del expuesto y que no se explican por ninguna de las dos razones clásicas; fenómenos que violan todos los principios en los que se funda nuestra concepción sobre la naturaleza y nos permiten una previsión sobre los fenómenos que en ella se despliegan. Y es necesario enfatizar que no se trata de aspectos contingentes de la disciplina: se trata de aspectos que se halla, en la base de la información cuántica y, por ejemplo, revolucionan el concepto de criptografía, todo ello con enormes implicaciones prácticas en sociedades dónde la información es (para bien o para mal) una variable importantísima. Desde luego, alimento esencial para la Filosofía, de ser cierto que "los hombres empiezan y empezaron siempre a filosofar movidos por el estupor".

No me voy a repetir en motivos ya conocidos del viraje y abandono de filosofar, ni recurrir a la explicación de razones más prosaicas, porque la prosa extendida también corre el riesgo de romperse.

Biografía

Victor Gómez Pin estudió Filosofía en la Sorbona dónde obtuvo el grado de Doctor de Estado con una tesis sobre el orden aristotélico. Actualmente es Catedrático de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona dónde ha impartido las asignaturas de Teoría del Conocimiento, Introducción al Pensamiento matemático, Ontología y Filosofía de las ciencias Formales. Ha sido profesor en la VIU (Venice International University), de Venecia, en cuya ciudad recibió en 2009 el Premio Internacional del Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti.

Su transcurso indisociablemente profesional y social está marcado por su incorporación al proyecto de "Zorroaga", en San Sebastian, iniciado en 1979 por el filósofo Ramón Valls Plana, e inmediatamente asumido por Javier Echeverría. Se aspiraba allí a que la Universidad del Pais Vasco se dotara de una sección de Filosofía que respondiera a la exigencia kantiana de ser "un departamento entre otros y sin embargo toda la universidad". La dificultad y previsible fracaso del empeño no impidió que en su día aceptaran incorporarse al proyecto, o jugaran un importante papel puntual, personas de muy diferentes intereses teóricos (incluidas personalidades ajenas a la filosofía en el sentido estricto, como Eduardo Chillida o el Medalla Fields de Matemáticas René Thom). Grande era también la disparidad en posicionamientos políticos, en un momento en el que el problema vasco era absolutamente candente. Pero se pretendía en aquella facultad de Zorroaga (otra cosa es que se consiguiera) que la diversidad en filiación política nunca primara sobre la exigencia de ser cabalmente humanos, es decir, avanzar siempre con la razón por delante.

Victor Gómez Pin trabaja actualmente en una tentativa de establecer el estado de la cuestión sobre las implicaciones que para el concepto heredado de naturaleza tienen ciertas disciplinas científicas contemporáneas. Pero convencido de que el reconocimiento de la pluralidad de intereses de la razón no implica renunciar a explorar los diferentes ámbitos de la misma, se ha introducido en el universo de Marcel Proust y en la apuesta de este escritor por hacer de la palabra matriz exclusiva de redención.
