Es difícil decir cuál fue el mejor, pero 1974 está entre los candidatos. Me refiero a la vida de los periodistas, claro. Aquel año unos jóvenes y humildes reporteros consiguieron derribar al hombre más poderoso del planeta. En 2009, los que quedan y trabajan lo hacen en periódicos en declive, cuya difusión en papel disminuye a ojos vista, reciben cada vez menos anuncios con los que equilibrar las cuentas y saben muy poco o quizás nada del futuro de su negocio, que será indefectiblemente digital. No es el único dato malo del año. Reporteros sin Fronteras nos ofrece un buen puñado de malas noticias adicionales respecto al número de periodistas asesinados en servicio, heridos, encarcelados o censurados. El año estuvo lleno de noticias sobre la prensa, y las noticias auténticas ya se sabe que no suelen ser buenas. Fue un año malo, pero pudo ser peor. De hecho, augures hubo que lo previeron más negro todavía. Los macabros pero simpáticos redactores del Observatorio de la Muerte de los Periódicos suscriben la afirmación que encabeza esta nota: ?Este fue incuestionablemente el peor año en la historia del negocio?. Habla de Estados Unidos, el lugar donde en realidad se ha inventado casi todo del oficio, lo bueno y lo malo: ¿cómo no iba a producirse allí antes que en ningún otro sitio el síndrome de la defunción? Allí, asegura, el nivel de ventas regresó a niveles anteriores a la segunda guerra mundial y los ingresos de publicidad fueron como en los años 60. Cerraron cabeceras históricas en Denver y Seattle y entraron en barrena otras en Boston, Chicago y San Francisco, pero no se produjo la mortandad masiva entre los grandes títulos que muchos anunciaban y algunos esperaban, debido sobre todo al recorte de costes y de puestos de trabajo más drástico y doloroso de la historia. Algo paralelo a lo que ha sucedido en todo el mundo desarrollado. Lo peor no es el mal estado en que están los diarios, sino el pésimo estado en que se halla el periodismo. Tiene que ver lo segundo con lo primero, pero no es la única explicación. Las causas de la crisis que sufre el periodismo hay que buscarlas mucho más allá de un simple cambio tecnológico. He escrito bastante sobre este asunto este año, pero me temo que tendré que seguir haciéndolo en el año que ahora empieza. Coincide con un aniversario a tener en cuenta. Hoy hace 50 años murió Albert Camus, en un accidente de coche, a los 46 años. Nicolas Sarkozy quiere con tal motivo llevar solemnemente sus restos al Panteón. Un periodismo menos pretencioso, ocupado a conciencia en combatir la mentira, es lo que nos conviene ahora, cuando salimos del peor año de nuestras vidas y nos adentramos en otro que amenaza con superarle. Pase que lleguen más años malos, pero, por favor, que no nos hagan más ciegos.
